Water Network Zoning and Flow Monitoring

One of the most effective ways to systematically reduce water losses is to divide a city’s water distribution network into smaller monitoring zones – DMAs (District Metered Areas). Instead of analysing the entire city as one large network, utilities can identify which specific area is experiencing increased water losses.

In each zone, the volume of water entering and, where necessary, leaving the area is monitored. Flow data can be collected from existing water meters by connecting a data logger to the pulse output, or by installing additional flow meters. Pressure monitoring can also be added to provide a better understanding of changes within the network.

Minimum night flow analysis is particularly useful. During the night, normal consumption is generally lower, so a continuous or increasing flow in a specific zone may indicate a possible leak. This allows leak detection teams to focus on a defined area instead of inspecting the entire network.

Data is collected and analysed automatically. If flow or pressure exceeds predefined limits or changes suddenly, SMS or other automatic alerts can be sent to responsible personnel. This allows faster detection of pipe failures and other abnormal network conditions.

The main benefit

Zoning does not locate the exact leak – it shows where to look for it. Flow and pressure data help identify the problematic zone. Acoustic loggers, correlation and other leak detection methods can then be used to pinpoint the exact location.

The result is a more transparent network, faster response to failures and a systematic approach to reducing water losses, rather than reacting only when a leak becomes visible.
